With the 2025 edition of the ICC Champions Trophy starting in 5 days, Ashwin has revealed how Dhoni helped Team India win the final and lift the trophy. However, it wasn’t the last over that the former Indian off-spinner mentioned but a different ploy that helped Team India gain control over the match.

England needed 130 runs to win, and having lost the early wicket of Alastair Cook, the Three Lions were wrestling back. Dhoni brought Ashwin on and told him to bowl a negative line (on his leg) to Trott. The move didn’t make much sense to Ashwin, but on the second ball, Trott was stumped, and two wickets fell after that as well.

“I still remember Mahi (MS Dhoni) bhai came up to me and said, ‘Don’t bowl over the stumps to Trott; bowl from around the wicket. He’ll try to play on the leg side, and if the ball spins, he’ll get stumped.’ I still can’t believe how he predicted that,” Ashwin said on a special episode of JioHotstar’s Unbeaten: Dhoni’s Dynamites.
