However, taxes have notably reduced the net amount he takes home. According to the business consultancy firm Taxology India, Kohli’s paycheck saw a decline to Rs 15 crore during the years 2022 to 2024. Nevertheless, this season has brought a significant boost, with his earnings soaring by 40% to Rs 21 crore. Across all IPL editions, his cumulative earnings now stand at a staggering Rs 179.70 crore.
Virat Kohli’s IPL salary faces hefty tax deductions
As per Section 28 of the Income Tax Act, 1961, IPL earnings are classified as income from a business or profession, placing them in the highest tax bracket.
- Base Tax: 30% on income exceeding Rs 15 lakh, amounting to Rs 6.3 crore.
- Surcharge: 25% applied to the tax for income above Rs 5 crore, equaling Rs 1.575 crore.
- Cess: 4% of the total tax amount, which comes to Rs 31 lakh.
