One young fan wearing an RCB jersey shouted, “Mai hu Virat Kohli!” Another fan said with a smile, “Mai Pakistan se hu magar Virat Kohli ko support karta hu.” (I am from Pakistan, still I am supporting Virat Kohli) These fans admire Kohli for his passion, style, and charisma, which have won hearts even across borders.
Shift in loyalty for fans in Pakistan
While Babar Azam, who is a key player for Pakistan, remains incredibly popular, this spontaneous support for Kohli among young fans suggests a shift. Many of these younger fans have been drawn to the glamour of the IPL and Kohli’s international fame, preferring his dynamic personality to Babar’s. This admiration reflects the power of sports to transcend traditional rivalries and recognise excellence, regardless of team boundaries.
