The 2000 Champions Trophy, then called the ICC Knockout Trophy, saw India and New Zealand face off in the final on October 15 in Nairobi, Kenya. New Zealand claimed their first major ICC title with a four-wicket victory with India going empty hand.
Batting first, India posted 264/6 in 50 overs, led by captain Sourav Ganguly’s 117 off 130 balls, supported by Sachin Tendulkar’s 69. The duo built a strong 141-run opening stand, but the middle order struggled to accelerate later in the innings.
New Zealand’s chase got off to a shaky start at 37/2 and later slumped to 132/5. However, all-rounder Chris Cairns turned the game around with a match-winning unbeaten 102. His 122-run partnership with Chris Harris (46) was crucial as New Zealand reached 265/6 in 49.4 overs, sealing the win with two balls to spare.
