Rajat Patidar and Ajinkya Rahane will have a tough challenge in maintaining fine balance as batters and captains in IPL 2025. Both the stars have been handed over the reins of their respective teams after their predecessors were released ahead of the mega auction. While it is important for the duo to settle down soon as skippers, it is essential for them to shine with the bat as well and not get lost in the world of captaincy alone.

Captains Rahane, Patidar need to allow bat to do talking

KKR’s Rahane and RCB’s Patidar had a phenomenal domestic season leading up to the IPL. The Mumbai batter finished as the leading run-scorer in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy with 469 runs while the Madhya Pradesh captain came second with 428 runs to his name. Both Rahane and Patidar scored five half-centuries each in the tournament.

Rahane had a good last couple of seasons in the IPL, when he was a part of CSK. In 2023 and 2024, he proved that he was not just a Test batter by amassing 326 and 242 runs respectively. A major part of his rebranding saw him play aggressive cricket like never before.

Patidar, on the other hand, is not as experienced as Rahane. He shot to fame only in 2024 after starring for RCB on multiple occasions. He amassed 395 runs in 15 matches in IPL 2024, averaging 30.38.

In terms of captaincy, Rahane has way more experience than Patidar, having led Mumbai. However, for both stars, the dynamics will completely change when it comes to the IPL. Besides, there will be a lot of pressure – on Rahane because KKR are defending champions and on Patidar because RCB are still hunting for their maiden IL trophy. While facing the complexities as skippers, they shouldn’t forget to ace their role as a batter as well. If they do, then they will lose relevance and would rather be a headache for a team.
